The Bonfire

We raked leaves all the sunny afternoon
into a slim briwn row along the hill.
. . .
As we worked on the hazy sky became
more distant, and a phoenix-wing of flame
flung out across the west. the hill grew dim.
The solitary poplar on its rim,
black, naked, stood alone against the sky
its lilac shadow crept, then hastend, ran,
and reached your feet. You wiped your forehead dry
and looked up. "Shall we light them-" i began-
Your match alread made a little flare
twin to the star caught in the poplar there,
and one thin smoke-wisp drifted up the air
